Biography

Blessed Peter of Saint James, also known as Peter Armengol or Armengaud, was a Mercedarian friar who is celebrated for his selfless acts of ransom and the redemption of Christian slaves held captive in Algiers by Muslims during the 13th century. He was born in Navarre, Spain, and dedicated his life to the service of God and the liberation of the oppressed.

Little is known about Peter's early life and family background, but he joined the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, commonly known as the Mercedarians, at a young age. The Mercedarians were founded for the specific purpose of ransoming Christian captives from the Moors in medieval Spain.

Peter's dedication to his calling was unwavering, and he displayed an exceptional commitment to the tenets of the Mercedarian Order. In the year 1256, he volunteered to travel to Algiers, a stronghold of Muslim enslavement, to negotiate the release of Christian prisoners. It was during this perilous mission that Peter's true character and unwavering faith were revealed.

For two years, Peter tirelessly advocated for the release of Christian captives through various means, often going as far as to offer himself as a replacement for those who were enslaved.
