Biography

Blessed Pere Vives Coll, also known as Pere Coll Vives, was a devoted member of the Claretians and a notable figure in the history of the Catholic Church. He was born on 23 September 1878 in the town of Pallejá, Barcelona, Spain. From a young age, Pere showed great piety and a strong inclination towards serving others.

At the age of 19, Pere Vives Coll joined the Congregation of Missionaries, Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, commonly known as the Claretians. This religious congregation, founded by St. Anthony Mary Claret, focuses on missions, education, and the promotion of Christian values. Pere embraced the mission of the Claretians wholeheartedly and dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel message.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant. Pere Vives Coll, along with numerous other Claretian priests and brothers, faced immense danger due to their unwavering faith. It was on 19 October 1936, at the age of 58, that Pere met his martyrdom. He was brutally executed at Mas Claret in Sant Pere dels Arquells, Lleida, Spain.

Pere Vives Coll's martyrdom was a result of his refusal to renounce his Catholic beliefs and principles even in the face of persecution. This special occasion took place at the renowned Basilica of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, and was presided over by Archbishop Angelo Amato.

On 21 December 2016, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, venerated Blessed Pere Vives Coll, and recognized his heroic sacrifice. This significant acknowledgment solidified his place among the faithful and granted him the title of blessed.

Today, the life and martyrdom of Blessed Pere Vives Coll serve as an inspiration to countless people around the world.
