Blessed Pere Vilar Espona, also known as Brother Narcís Maria and Brother Narcís Maria Vilar i Espona, was a member of the Benedictine Subiaco Congregation. He is regarded as a martyr, having been killed during the Spanish Civil War. His feast day is celebrated on July 28th.
Pere Vilar Espona was born on August 7, 1916, in Hostalets de BalenyÖ, a small town near Barcelona, Spain. From a young age, he displayed deep devotion to his faith and felt a calling to religious life. With the support of his family, he entered the abbey of Montserrat to pursue his vocation.
In the monastery, Pere Vilar Espona took on the religious name Brother Narcís Maria. He dedicated himself to a life of prayer, asceticism, and the study of sacred texts. Known for his humility, kindness, and cheerful disposition, he quickly earned the admiration and respect of those around him.
However, during the tumultuous years of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant in Spain. As an unwavering defender of his faith, Brother Narcís Maria became a target of anti-Catholic forces. On July 28, 1936, in Montcada, Barcelona, he was martyred for his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs.
Following his death, Brother Narcís Maria was buried in the Cripta de los Monjes Mártires in the Montserrat Basilica in Barcelona. His sacrificial life and unwavering faith inspired many, and his reputation as a holy martyr grew over time.
On June 28, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI recognized Brother Narcís Maria's martyrdom with a decree, officially venerating him as Blessed Pere Vilar Espona. This act acknowledged his heroic sacrifice for the Catholic faith. On October 13, 2013, Pope Francis performed the beatification ceremony in Tarragona, Spain, elevating him to the rank of blessed.
