Biography

Blessed Pere Sisterna Torrent, also known as Brother Elm Miquel, was a member of the Christian Brothers and a dedicated teacher. He was born on 21 March 1878 in Llagostera, Girona, Spain.

From a young age, Pere felt a calling to the religious life and dedicated himself to the service of others. He joined the Christian Brothers, a religious order committed to educating and nurturing young minds. Pere took on the name Brother Elm Miquel and lived his life in dedication to his faith and the education of his students.

Pere's teaching career was marked by his compassion, wisdom, and strong commitment to instilling moral values in his students. He was deeply loved and respected by both his students and colleagues for his gentle demeanor and tireless dedication to their well-being. Through his teaching, he sought to guide young minds towards a life rooted in faith, knowledge, and love for others.

However, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Brother Elm Miquel's commitment to his faith and his refusal to denounce his beliefs placed him in great danger. As the conflict escalated, persecution of Catholic religious figures became increasingly common. Despite the risks, Pere remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith and refused to renounce his Catholic identity.

On 26 August 1936, in Tarragona, Spain, Brother Elm Miquel met a martyr's death. He was executed for his unwavering faith and refusal to abandon his Catholic heritage. Pere's courage and devotion to his beliefs served as an inspiration to all those who witnessed his sacrifice.

In recognition of his martyrdom, Pere Sisterna Torrent was venerated on 28 June 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI, who issued a decree acknowledging his exemplary life and ultimate sacrifice. Then, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified Pere, officially declaring him Blessed Pere Sisterna Torrent. The beatification ceremony took place in Tarragona, Spain, where Pere had lived and died for his faith.

Today, Blessed Pere Sisterna Torrent is remembered and venerated as a patron of educators and a shining example of steadfastness and devotion to the Catholic faith. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire countless individuals around the world as they strive to live out their faith with courage and unwavering commitment.
