Death: August 5, 1936
Blessed Pere Massó Llagostera, also known as Brother Edmond Ángel, was a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, a religious order dedicated to the education of young people. He was born on April 20, 1897, in Sant Joan Les Fonts, Girona, Spain.
Growing up in a devout Catholic family, Pere Massó Llagostera felt a calling to serve God from a young age. He entered the novitiate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and made his religious profession, taking the name Brother Edmond Ángel. As a Brother, he devoted himself to the education and spiritual guidance of students, seeking to instill in them the values of faith, knowledge, and virtue.
In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, the socio-political climate in Spain became increasingly hostile towards the Church and religious communities. Despite the risks, Brother Edmond Ángel remained steadfast in his commitment to his vocation, continuing to teach and provide spiritual support to his students. However, the violence and persecution against the Catholic Church finally reached Brother Edmond Ángel's community.
On August 5, 1936, in Estanyol, El Brull, Barcelona, Brother Edmond Ángel was martyred for his faith. His courageous refusal to renounce his religious beliefs and allegiance to the Church led to his execution. He accepted his martyrdom with great humility and trust in God, becoming a shining example of devotion in the face of persecution.
In recognition of his sacrifice, Brother Edmond Ángel was venerated by Pope John Paul II on June 22, 2004. The Holy Father declared him a martyr of the faith, acknowledging his heroic witness to Christ. Then, on October 28, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, publicly recognizing him as Blessed Pere Massó Llagostera.
Blessed Pere Massó Llagostera's feast day is celebrated on August 5th, the date of his martyrdom. His life and martyrdom serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless men and women who remained faithful to their beliefs even in the face of severe persecution. His story continues to inspire and encourage people to stand firm in their faith and to seek God's will in their lives.
