Biography

Blessed Pere Gelabert Amer, also known as Pere Gelabert, was born on 29 March 1887 in Manacor, Mallorca, Islas Baleares, Spain. He was a devout Catholic and dedicated his life to serving his community and the Church. In 1907, Pere Gelabert joined the Society of Jesus as a brother, embracing a life of religious commitment.

Throughout his life, Pere Gelabert displayed great skill and expertise as an electrician and mechanic. He utilized these talents in the service of his fellow Jesuits and the local community in Gandia, Spain. As an electrician, he worked diligently to maintain and improve the facilities of his community, ensuring a comfortable and safe environment for his fellow brothers.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, which ravaged Spain from 1936 to 1939, Pere Gelabert's unwavering faith and dedication to his calling became evident. Despite the danger and unrest surrounding him, he continued to serve both within the Jesuit community and beyond, providing support and assistance to those in need.

Tragically, on 23 August 1936, Pere Gelabert was martyred for his faith and commitment to his religious vocation. He was martyred in Tavernes de Valldigna, Valencia, Spain during this violent and chaotic period in Spanish history.

Recognizing his profound sacrifice, Pope John Paul II, on 20 December 1999, decreed the martyrdom of Pere Gelabert. This declaration signifies the Church's recognition of his death as a result of hatred against the faith. Consequently, Pere Gelabert was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 11 March 2001, further affirming his sanctity and intercessory power.

Although there is no specific representation associated with Blessed Pere Gelabert Amer, his life serves as a shining example of selflessness, devotion, and unwavering faith. His feast day is celebrated on 23 August each year, honoring his memory and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his faith and community.
