Biography

Blessed Pellegrino of Falerone, also known as Pelagius, was the son of Roger, a wealthy lord from Falerone, Italy. Born in an unknown year, Pellegrino's early life was marked by his pursuit of knowledge. He went on to study philosophy and canon law at the prestigious University of Bologna in Italy.

However, Pellegrino's life took a dramatic turn when he encountered the teachings of Saint Francis of Assisi. Deeply moved by the saint's example of humility and devotion to God, Pellegrino abandoned his studies and became one of the first followers of Saint Francis. He embraced the Franciscan way of life, dedicated to living in poverty, simplicity, and total reliance on God.

Pellegrino's commitment to his newfound faith led him on a pilgrimage to the Holy Lands. As a true pilgrim, he humbly journeyed to sacred sites, seeking spiritual insight and growth. Upon returning from his pilgrimage, Pellegrino continued to serve the Franciscan Order with utmost humility, considering himself to be the lowest of servants.

Though not ordained as a priest, Pellegrino chose to serve as a lay brother, offering his services in various Franciscan communities. In this role, he fulfilled various humble duties, providing assistance in daily chores and practical tasks. Through his dedication and selflessness, Pellegrino became a model of servanthood to his fellow friars and the wider Christian community.

Blessed Pellegrino lived a life of deep devotion and unwavering faith, striving to imitate the humility of Christ. His commitment to the Franciscan way of life inspired many, as he embraced poverty and simplicity as means of drawing closer to God.

Blessed Pellegrino passed away in the year 1233 at the Convent of San Severino March in Italy, dying of natural causes. His holy and exemplary life did not go unnoticed, and his reputation for sanctity continued to grow over the centuries.

On July 31, 1821, Pope Pius VII confirmed the cult of Blessed Pellegrino, declaring him beatified. This beatification recognized Pellegrino's virtuous life and his close relationship with God, highlighting him as an example of holiness and devotion. His feast day is celebrated on March 27, commemorating the day of his death and his heavenly union with God.

Blessed Pellegrino of Falerone's life serves as an inspiration and a reminder of the humility and simplicity that lies at the heart of the Franciscan spirituality.
