Biography

Blessed Pedro Vázquez, also known as Father Pedro of Saint Catherine, was a renowned Dominican priest and missionary who dedicated his life to spreading the Catholic faith. He was born in Verín, Orense, Spain in 1590. From an early age, Pedro showed great piety and devotion, leading him to join the Dominican Order.

After his ordination as a priest, Pedro was assigned to serve in Madrid, Spain, where he diligently ministered to the faithful. However, his strong desire to bring the Gospel to distant lands ultimately led him to be transferred to Manila in the Philippines. There, he fervently carried out his pastoral duties, tirelessly working to strengthen the faithful and share the teachings of Christianity.

Pedro's missionary zeal took him even further, as he embarked on a journey to Japan, a country where Christians were facing persecution. Aware of the dangers that awaited him, Pedro fearlessly continued his evangelization work, determined to bring the light of Christ to the people of Japan.

Tragically, on 18 April 1623, Pedro was arrested for the crime of moving the body of the martyred Blessed Ludovico Flores. Subsequently, he endured 16 months of severe abuse and harsh imprisonment, all stemming from his refusal to renounce his Christian faith. Despite the inhumane treatment he endured, Pedro remained steadfast in his devotion to Christ and his commitment to the Catholic Church.

Finally, on 25 August 1624, Pedro Vázquez was martyred, burned alive in the city of Omura, Nagasaki, Japan. His unwavering fidelity and refusal to renounce his faith even in the face of torment exemplified his immense courage and dedication as a servant of God.

Blessed Pedro Vázquez, along with the 205 Martyrs of Japan, is venerated as a symbol of the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by countless courageous Christians during the time of religious persecution in Japan. He was officially recognized for his martyrdom on 26 February 1866 by Pope Blessed Pius IX, who declared him blessed. On 7 May 1867, Pope Blessed Pius IX further confirmed his beatification, honoring his heroic witness to the Christian faith.

The memory of Blessed Pedro Vázquez is commemorated on 25 August as well as on 10 September, particularly alongside the 205 Martyrs of Japan. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire countless faithful believers to remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of adversity.
