Biography

Blessed Pedro Rivera Y Rivera, also known as Candido, was born on 3 September 1912 in Villacreces, in the diocese of Leon, Spain. He entered the Franciscan Friars Minor Conventual and took the name Pedro upon joining the order. Pedro made his novitiate in Granollers, Spain, and later pursued his theological studies in Osimo, Italy.

In 1933, he made his solemn vows as a Franciscan in Rome, Italy, and was ordained a priest in 1935. Returning to Spain, Father Pedro served as the superior of the Franciscan community in Granollers. He was well-known for his exemplary religious life and his dedication to the teachings of the Franciscan Rule, spirituality, and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Father Pedro Rivera Y Rivera was deeply devoted to the Eucharist, as he understood the significance of the sacrament in the life of a priest. He actively promoted higher education for his fellow Franciscan brothers, recognizing the importance of intellectual formation alongside spiritual development.

Tragically, Father Pedro faced severe persecution during the Spanish Civil War. He was arrested multiple times for the offense of being a priest, an act that was targeted by anti-Catholic factions. Despite the risks, he remained steadfast in his faith and commitment to his vocation.

Finally, on 6 September 1936, Father Pedro Rivera Y Rivera was martyred. He was executed by being shot on L’Arrabassada highway in Barcelona, Spain. His death was a testament to his unwavering fidelity to Christ and the Church, even in the face of persecution.

Blessed Pedro Rivera Y Rivera's life serves as an inspiration to all who strive for holiness and courageously defend their beliefs. Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope John Paul II decreed his veneration on 26 March 1999. Although he has not yet been beatified, he is remembered and honored annually on 1 September and 6 November as one of the Martyred Friars Minor Conventuals of Granollers.
