Blessed Pedro Ortigosa Oraá, also known as Aureliano, was a devout Catholic monk and member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on 5 February 1894 in Torralba del Río, Navarra, Spain. From a young age, Pedro displayed a deep commitment to his faith, and he felt called to devote his life to serving God.
Pedro joined the Marist Brothers, an Order known for their dedication to education and spirituality. He embraced the monastic life, taking on the name Aureliano, and became a respected member of the Order. His fervent dedication and humble nature endeared him to his fellow brothers, who regarded him as an exemplary model of piety and virtue.
Unfortunately, during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, religious persecution was rampant, and Christians, especially clergy and religious, faced immense hostility. Brother Aureliano, steadfast in his faith, refused to renounce his Catholicism or abandon his religious vows, despite the grave dangers and threats that surrounded him.
On 7 August 1936, in the city of Badajoz, Spain, Brother Aureliano was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. He was among several individuals who were executed during this period solely because of their religious beliefs. Brother Aureliano's steadfastness in the face of persecution and his ultimate sacrifice became a powerful testament to his unwavering devotion to God and the Catholic Church.
Brother Aureliano was venerated on 3 June 2013 by Pope Francis, who recognized his martyrdom through a decree of the martyrology. On 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, declaring him blessed, and thus affirming his sanctity.
