Biography

Blessed Pedro Luque Cano, also known as Pedro Cano, was a devout Catholic priest of the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, who dedicated his life to serving the spiritual needs of others. He was born on October 5, 1873, in Montoro, Córdoba, Spain, into a deeply religious family.

After completing his studies, Pedro Cano was ordained a priest and quickly gained a reputation for his kindness, compassion, and unwavering faith. He was appointed as the chaplain of the Montoro hospital, where he tirelessly ministered to the sick and provided spiritual guidance and comfort to patients and their families.

During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, Blessed Pedro Cano remained steadfast in his commitment to his faith and continued to carry out his pastoral duties despite the increasing dangers and threats faced by the Catholic Church. He fearlessly defended the rights of the Church and spoke out against the injustices committed against believers.

Tragically, on July 22, 1936, Blessed Pedro Cano was martyred for his faith and unwavering dedication to God. He was killed in the town of El Viso de los Pedroches, Córdoba, Spain. His martyrdom, a result of the widespread persecution of Catholics during the Spanish Civil War, served as a testament to his strong belief in Christ and his willingness to sacrifice everything for the Gospel.

On November 23, 2020, Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of Pedro Cano and declared him "Blessed," acknowledging his heroic virtue and ultimate sacrifice. This recognition was followed by his beatification on October 16, 2021, also by Pope Francis. The beatification recognition ceremony took place at the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Córdoba, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.

Blessed Pedro Cano serves as an inspiring example of faith and dedication to the Catholic Church, particularly in the face of persecution and adversity. His feast day is celebrated on July 22nd, the day of his martyrdom, and Catholics around the world honor his memory and seek his intercession. His life continues to inspire believers to remain steadfast in their faith and to serve their communities with love and compassion.
