Death: September 25, 1936
Blessed Pedro Leoz Portillo, also known as Brother Pablo María of Saint Joseph, was a member of the Passionists and a martyr of the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 17 February 1882 in Leoz, Navarra, Spain.
Pedro Leoz Portillo grew up in a devout Catholic family and from a young age displayed a deep spirituality and a strong commitment to living a life of holiness. He entered the Passionist Congregation and professed his religious vows, taking the name Brother Pablo María of Saint Joseph.
As a Passionist, Brother Pablo María dedicated his life to the pursuit of God and the service of others. He lived a life of prayer, austerity, and penance, striving to emulate the sufferings of Christ. Known for his humility, charity, and selflessness, he became a respected figure within the religious community.
Tragically, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936 brought about a wave of persecution against Catholics and religious orders. Despite the dangers, Brother Pablo María courageously continued his mission of spreading the Gospel and providing solace to those in need. He refused to renounce his faith even in the face of imminent danger.
On 25 September 1936, Brother Pablo María was arrested by anti-Catholic forces in Carrión de Calatrava, Ciudad Real, Spain. He was falsely accused of collaborating with the enemies of the Spanish Republic and was subjected to a sham trial. Unwilling to compromise his religious convictions, he steadfastly proclaimed his loyalty to Christ and the Catholic Church.
Tragically, Brother Pablo María was sentenced to death, and on the same day, he was executed for his faith. He became one of the numerous Catholic martyrs of the Spanish Civil War, joining the ranks of those who sacrificed their lives for their faith.
Blessed Pedro Leoz Portillo's beatification process began years after his death. His martyrdom and heroic virtues were officially recognized by the Catholic Church on 28 November 1988, when Pope John Paul II issued a decree of martyrdom, acknowledging his death as a result of hatred for the faith. Subsequently, on 1 October 1989, Pope John Paul II beatified him, declaring him blessed.
Blessed Pedro Leoz Portillo's life serves as a powerful testimony to the unwavering faith and extraordinary courage exhibited by Catholic martyrs during times of persecution. He continues to inspire and intercede for all those who turn to him for spiritual guidance and support. His feast day is celebrated on 25 September, and he is also commemorated on 23 July as one of the Martyrs of Daimiel.
