Biography

Blessed Pedro Artolozaga Mellique, also known as Pietro Artolozaga Mellique, was born on 31 January 1913 in Astrabua-Erandio, Vizcaya, Spain. He received his education at the Salesians of Don Bosco college in Santander, Spain, where he demonstrated exceptional determination, intelligence, and devotion to his studies.

Inspired by the holiness and mission of the Salesian Order, Pedro made the decision to join the Order himself in 1926. He took his solemn profession in 1931, committing himself wholeheartedly to the service of God and others.

After his profession, Pedro was assigned to the María Auxiliadora school in Salamanca, Spain in 1933. While there, he not only dedicated himself to teaching but also continued his studies, preparing himself for the priesthood. Pedro's sincere faith and dedication to his vocation earned him the respect and admiration of both his students and fellow religious.

However, Pedro's path took a tragic turn when the Spanish Civil War erupted on 20 July 1936. As the conflict escalated, the anti-Christian militia began targeting priests and religious, making it increasingly perilous for Pedro to continue his work and carry out his ministry. Forced to flee the school and go into hiding, Pedro's life became a constant struggle for survival.

Despite his efforts to remain hidden, Pedro was eventually discovered by the anti-Christian militia. He was subsequently imprisoned in several locations, enduring harsh conditions and persecution for his unwavering faith. Eventually, Pedro faced a sham trial in a mock court, where he was falsely accused of crimes against the anti-Christian regime.

On 2 October 1936, in Madrid, Spain, Pedro Artolozaga Mellique, along with many other Catholic priests and religious, was brutally martyred for his faith and commitment to Christ. His body was found dumped on a highway the following day, 3 October.

In recognition of his sacrificial witness and unwavering faith, Pedro Artolozaga Mellique was venerated on 26 June 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI, who decreed his martyrdom. On 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI officially beatified him, acknowledging his heroic virtue and his ultimate sacrifice for his faith.

Blessed Pedro Artolozaga Mellique is commemorated on two feast days: 2 October, the day of his martyrdom, and 22 September, as one of the Martyred Salesians of the Spanish Civil War. His life continues to inspire and serve as a reminder of the profound commitment and courage demonstrated by those who face persecution for their Christian beliefs.
