Biography

Blessed Pedro Armendáriz Zabaleta was a lay brother in the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission. He was born on April 29, 1877, in Tracheta, Navarra, Spain. Pedro devoted his life to serving God by joining the Vincentian Congregation as a lay brother. He lived a life of simplicity and humility, dedicating himself to the service of the poor and the marginalized.

During the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Pedro Armendáriz Zabaleta valiantly stood by his faith and commitment to his religious community. Despite the dangers and social unrest that surrounded him, Pedro remained steadfast in his mission to serve the needy and provide spiritual care to all those who sought his assistance. His compassionate nature and selfless devotion made him a pillar of strength and hope for many in those troubled times.

Tragically, on November 27, 1936, Pedro Armendáriz Zabaleta fell victim to the violence and persecution that characterized the Spanish Civil War. It was in the town of Canillas, Madrid, Spain, that Pedro met his martyrdom, upholding his faith until his last breath. Recognizing his virtuous life and martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Pedro Armendáriz Zabaleta as venerable on March 23, 2017, through a decree of martyrdom. This recognition signifies the official acknowledgment of Pedro's holiness and his sacrifice.

On November 11, 2017, in a beatification ceremony held at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena in Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain, Pedro Armendáriz Zabaleta was beatified by Pope Francis. The beatification was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid, signifying Pedro's elevated status within the Catholic Church.
