Blessed Paulus Yi Dogi was a layman martyr in the apostolic vicariate of Korea. He was born in Cheongyang, Chungcheong-do, South Korea in 1743. Little is known about his early life and family, as historical records are scarce. However, it is believed that Paulus Yi Dogi grew up in a devout Catholic household and was deeply committed to his faith.
During the late 18th century, under the Joseon Dynasty, Christianity faced persecution in Korea. Despite the risks involved, Paulus Yi Dogi openly professed his faith and actively participated in the underground Catholic community. He dedicated himself to spreading the Gospel and supporting the growth of the Church in Korea.
By serving as a catechist, Paulus Yi Dogi played a crucial role in instructing and evangelizing other Catholics. He fearlessly shared the teachings of the Church and supported the community in their spiritual development. Paulus Yi Dogi's dedication and faithfulness quickly made him a respected figure among the Korean Catholics.
In 1791, the government began a widespread crackdown on Christianity, leading to the persecution and execution of numerous Catholics, including Paulus Yi Dogi. On July 24, 1798, he was martyred in Jeongsan, Chungcheong-do, South Korea, along with many other faithful Catholics. They were brutally tortured and executed for their refusal to renounce their faith.
Blessed Paulus Yi Dogi's martyrdom was a testament to his unwavering commitment to Christ and the Catholic Church. His courage in the face of persecution and his dedication to spreading the Gospel have made him a revered figure in Korean Catholicism.
In recognition of his martyrdom and his exemplary life, Pope Francis decreed the veneration of Blessed Paulus Yi Dogi on February 7, 2014. The pope beatified him on August 15, 2014, acknowledging his status as a blessed martyr of the Church. He is now honored and remembered on his feast days, which are celebrated on July 24 and September 20 as one of the Martyrs of Korea.
