Biography

Blessed Paulino Reoyo García, also known as Blessed Paulino of Almagro, was born on 22 June 1913 in Atapuerca, Burgos, Spain. He received his education from the Dominicans in Almagro, Spain, and it was during this time that he developed a deep love for the Dominican spirituality and way of life.

Inspired by their commitment to preaching the Gospel and serving others, Paulino joined the Dominican Order on 29 September 1929. Four years later, on 7 October 1934, he made his solemn profession, fully dedicating himself to a life of faith, prayer, and preaching.

Unfortunately, this period in Spain was marked by great social and political unrest, leading to the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Amidst the violence and persecution that ensued, Blessed Paulino became a victim of religious persecution. On 8 August 1936, in Manzanares, Ciudad Real, Spain, he was martyred for his unwavering faith and commitment to the Gospel.

Blessed Paulino's short life was characterized by his deep spirituality and his desire to imitate Christ in all things. He fervently sought to bring others to a closer relationship with God through his preaching and example. Despite the challenging times he lived in, Paulino remained steadfast in his devotion to his Dominican community and the teachings of the Catholic Church.

In recognition of his virtuous life and martyrdom, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom on 11 December 2019, proclaiming him as "Blessed." Then, on 18 June 2022, Pope Francis presided over the beatification ceremony at the Cathedral of Santa María de la Sede in Sevilla, Spain. The ceremony was led by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, and it celebrated the life and witness of Blessed Paulino Reoyo García.

Now, Blessed Paulino Reoyo García is remembered as a shining example of faith, courage, and dedication to God. His feast day is celebrated on 8 August, commemorating the date of his martyrdom, and on some Spanish calendars, it is also observed on 6 November. As a martyr of the Spanish Civil War, he serves as an inspiration to Catholics and all people of goodwill, urging us to remain faithful and steadfast in our own journey of faith.
