Biography

Blessed Patrick Ohealy, also known as Pádraig √ì Héilí and Patrick O‚ÄôHely, was a devout Catholic who dedicated his life to the service of God as a member of the Franciscan Friars Minor (Observants). Born around 1543 in Dromahaire, a small town in Leitrim, Ireland, he embarked on his journey of faith by entering the novitiate of the Order in 1561.

As a young friar, Ohealy displayed exceptional intellectual abilities, and he was sent to study at the prestigious University of Alcalá in Spain. After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest, and his dedication and piety quickly caught the attention of his superiors within the Order.

In 1575, Ohealy was transferred by the Order to Rome, Italy, where he was appointed to a position of great responsibility and influence. His reputation as a learned and righteous priest continued to grow, and in 1576, Pope Gregory XIII personally chose him to be the bishop of Mayo, Ireland. However, due to various circumstances, it took Ohealy over a year to actually reach his diocese.

During his time as bishop, Ohealy worked diligently to uphold the Catholic faith and protect the rights of the faithful in the face of increasing religious tension and persecution. He formed a close partnership with Conn O'Rourke, another dedicated Catholic leader in Ireland, and together they offered hope and spiritual guidance to their flock in a time of immense struggle.

However, as the persecutions of Queen Elizabeth I intensified, Ohealy's dedication to his faith and his refusal to renounce Catholicism made him a target of the English authorities. He was captured and imprisoned, enduring cruel torture and suffering for his beliefs. Despite the immense pressures, Ohealy remained steadfast and unwavering in his faith until the end.

On August 31, 1579, Blessed Patrick Ohealy was hanged outside the gates of Kilmallock, Limerick, Ireland, sealing his martyrdom. His sacrifice and unwavering faith served as an inspiration to many throughout Ireland and beyond.

Recognizing his courage and commitment to his faith, Pope John Paul II declared Patrick Ohealy a martyr on July 6, 1991. Later, on September 27, 1992, the same pope beatified him during a ceremony in Rome, Italy, thereby acknowledging his sanctity and holding him up as an example of Christian virtue for the faithful.

Blessed Patrick Ohealy's feast days are celebrated on August 13 and August 31 on some calendars. Additionally, he is honored as one of the Irish Martyrs on June 20, commemorating his sacrifice along with other Irish Catholics who faced persecution during this tumultuous period in history.
