Blessed Patricio Gellida Llorach, also known as Brother Rafaél José, was a Salesian brother, teacher, and martyr in the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 16 March 1871 in Benicarló, Castellón, Spain. Patricio dedicated his life to educating and guiding young people as a member of the Salesian Congregation.

As a Salesian brother, Patricio played a crucial role in the education of children and youth, shaping their spiritual growth with his teaching and guidance. He was known for his loving and compassionate nature, mentoring countless students and inspiring them with his devotion to God and commitment to the values of the Salesian order.

Sadly, during the turbulent years of the Spanish Civil War, Patricio's faith and dedication to his vocation led to his martyrdom. The war brought about widespread persecution of religious individuals, particularly Catholics. On 18 August 1936, in his hometown of Benicarló, Castellón, Spain, Patricio was brutally killed for his refusal to renounce his faith and abandon his mission as a Salesian brother.

His unwavering devotion to God and his unwavering commitment to his religious vocation made him a symbol of courage and sacrifice during this tumultuous period in Spanish history. Patricio's exemplary life and martyrdom have been recognized by the Catholic Church.

On 28 June 2012, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom, recognizing Patricio as a martyr for the faith. This decree paved the way for his beatification, a solemn ceremony in which the Church declares a person blessed and worthy of veneration for their holy life and death.

Patricio Gellida Llorach was beatified on 13 October 2013 by Pope Francis in a ceremony held in Tarragona, Spain. This beatification served as a testament to Patricio's faithfulness, and it drew attention to his remarkable life and the sacrifice he made in the service of God.

Blessed Patricio Gellida Llorach stands as a shining example of selflessness, dedication, and courage in the face of persecution. His memory continues to inspire and his intercession is sought by those who look to his life as a model of Christian witness. On his feast day, celebrated on 18 August each year, the faithful honor his memory and seek his heavenly intercession.
