Biography

Blessed Ovidio Bravo Porras was a Dominican lay brother who dedicated his life to serving God. He was born on 13 April 1908 in the small town of Fuenteandrino, located in the province of Palencia, Spain. From an early age, Ovidio showed great faith and a deep desire to follow in the footsteps of Christ.

Ovidio joined the Dominican Order as a lay brother, a religious vocation that allowed him to serve the community while remaining outside the priesthood. His humble and selfless nature made him a beloved member of the Order, and he was always willing to assist his brothers in any way he could. On 2 July 1935, Ovidio made his profession, taking the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, dedicating his life entirely to God.

Tragically, during the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War, Ovidio was martyred for his faith. On 14 August 1936, in the town of El Picado, located in Almagro, Ciudad Real, Spain, Ovidio bravely faced persecution and ultimately gave his life for his unwavering devotion to Christ. His martyred death has become a testament to his courage and unwavering faith.

On 11 December 2019, Pope Francis recognized the martyrdom of Ovidio Bravo Porras, declaring him venerable.
