Death: October 1, 28
Blessed Olga Pérezmonteserín N√∫ñez was a lay woman in the diocese of Astorga, Spain, who dedicated her life to serving others as a Red Cross nurse. She was born on 16 March 1913 in Paris, France, and later moved to Spain.
During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, Olga was a witness to the immense suffering and violence that engulfed her country. Despite the dangers and uncertainties of the time, she courageously continued her nursing work, providing care and comfort to those in need, regardless of their political affiliations.
Tragically, during the course of her service, Olga was subjected to a horrifying ordeal. She was raped and, ultimately, murdered. On the fateful day of 28 October 1936, around noon, Olga was shot in a field near Pola de Somiedo, Asturias, Spain. Her body was interred in a mass grave in the same field where she was executed.
Olga's remarkable life and selfless sacrifice did not go unnoticed. Her holiness and martyrdom were recognized by the Catholic Church. On 11 June 2019, Pope Francis issued a decree of martyrdom, officially recognizing Olga as a martyr for the faith. This declaration signified her willingness to give up her life rather than renounce her Christian beliefs.
Nearly two years later, on 29 May 2021, Pope Francis elevated Olga Pérezmonteserín N√∫ñez to the rank of Blessed during a beatification ceremony celebrated at the Cathedral of Santa María, Astorga, Spain. This recognition further highlighted her exemplary virtue, martyrdom, and the heavenly reward awaiting her.
In honor of Blessed Olga Pérezmonteserín N√∫ñez, her feast day is celebrated on 28 October each year. Her remains were eventually re-interred for the first time in 1938 in the city of Astorga, Spain. In 1948, her final resting place was established in the cathedral of Astorga, a testament to her unwavering faith and the profound impact she had on the faithful even after her death.
Blessed Olga Pérezmonteserín N√∫ñez serves as an inspiration for all, particularly those who find themselves amidst adversity and strife. Her life, dedicated to the service of others, teaches us the value of selflessness, compassion, and unwavering faith. May her example continue to guide and inspire us as we strive to live faithfully in our own lives.
