Blessed Norberto Cembranos De La Verdura, born on 6 June 1891 in Villalquite, León, Spain, was a devout Catholic who dedicated his life to serving God. His parents, inspired by his feast day, named him Norberto in honor of Saint Norbert of Magdeburg.
Norberto's religious vocation led him to join the Franciscan Capuchin lay oblates in El Pardo, Madrid, Spain. He embraced their way of life and committed himself to prayer, study, and works of charity. Norberto's humble and selfless nature earned him respect and admiration from his fellow oblates.
Tragically, in 1936, during the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Norberto's convent in El Pardo came under siege by hundreds of militiamen. Recognizing the danger he was facing, Norberto managed to escape and sought refuge in a local inn. However, his dedication to his religious life could not remain hidden for long, and he was eventually discovered, arrested, and accused of being a religious. Despite the difficult circumstances, Norberto remained steadfast in his faith.
On 23 September 1936, in Madrid, Spain, Norberto Cembranos De La Verdura was executed for his unwavering commitment to his religious calling. His martyrdom is a testament to his courage and unwavering faith in the face of persecution.
Recognizing his sacrifice and the virtues he exemplified, Pope Francis decreed the veneration of Norberto on 27 March 2013. Later, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis further honored him by beatifying him, celebrating the beatification ceremony at the Complex Educatiu in Tarragona, Spain. The ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, highlighting Norberto's exemplary life and his ultimate sacrifice for his faith.
