Biography

Blessed Nicola of Gesturi, also known as Giovanni Angelo Salvatore Medda, was born on 4 August 1882 in Gesturi, Cagliari, Italy. He was the sixth child of Giovanni Medda and Priama Cogoni Zedda. Sadly, Nicola's father passed away when he was just five years old, and his mother died when he was thirteen. As a result, he spent much of his youth living with his adult sister, who sent him to work on the family farm and tend to the cattle.

Nicola's life took a significant turn when he made his First Communion in 1896. This experience deeply impacted him and sparked a profound call to religious life within him. Despite facing various challenges and setbacks, including a severe illness, Nicola's determination to answer this call only grew stronger. In March 1911, at the age of twenty-nine, he joined the Franciscan Friars Minor Capuchins at Cagliari, Italy, as a third order oblate, taking on the name Nicola. He later made his solemn profession on 16 February 1919, dedicating his life to the service of God.

During his early years in religious life, Nicola served as a cook and then as a kitchen supervisor in various houses in Sanluri, Sassari, and Oristano for over a decade. However, in 1924, he was assigned to beg in the streets to support his house in Cagliari. Nicola embraced this task wholeheartedly, spending the remaining 34 years of his life fulfilling this work. Although his primary goal was to collect money to support his house, Nicola also saw begging as an opportunity to share his faith with those he encountered on the streets.

Despite experiencing rejection from many who disapproved of his status as a beggar, Brother Nicola's wisdom and holiness became widely recognized. People sought him out for counsel and spiritual guidance, as they found him to be a source of profound wisdom. He was known for his compassionate demeanor and encouraged others to care for the poor, emphasizing the importance of charitable acts.

Brother Nicola's reputation continued to grow, and he was frequently asked to visit the sick in hospitals. Numerous reports circulated about healings attributed to his intercession. His selfless care for those affected by World War II, especially those who had been displaced and abandoned, further exemplified his dedication to serving others.

Blessed Nicola of Gesturi died on 8 June 1958 in Cagliari, Italy, from natural causes. His life of humility, devotion, and selflessness inspired many. Pope John Paul II recognized his heroic virtues on 25 June 1996, leading to his veneration. On 3 October 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified Brother Nicola, acknowledging his extraordinary holiness and the example he set for others.

Blessed Nicola of Gesturi's feast days are celebrated on 8 June and the first Sunday in August in Gesturi, Italy. His life serves as a reminder of the transformative power of faith, charity, and dedication to the service of others.
