Biography

Blessed Nicolás Hidalgo García, a martyr of the Spanish Civil War, was a devoted priest of the diocese of Córdoba, Spain, who faithfully served the Bujalance community. He was born on 7 December 1870 in the town of Moriles, Córdoba, Spain.

From a young age, Nicolás displayed a deep piety and love for the Catholic faith. This led him to pursue a vocation to the priesthood, and he entered the seminary to receive his formation. After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest and began his ministry in the diocese of Córdoba.

As a priest, Nicolás dedicated himself to shepherding his parishioners and nurturing their spiritual lives. Known for his humility, gentleness, and genuine care for others, he became a beloved figure in the community. He tirelessly preached the Gospel and provided pastoral guidance, working to strengthen the faith of those entrusted to his care.

Nicolás Hidalgo García became a victim of this persecution and was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his faith. On 21 August 1936, he was brutally killed in Bujalance, Córdoba, Spain.

In recognition of his courageous death as a witness to the Christian faith, Pope Francis solemnly declared Nicolás Hidalgo García's martyrdom on 23 November 2020. This decree of martyrdom venerated him as a Blessed and acknowledged his sacrifice for the sake of the Gospel.

Further honoring his memory and sacrifice, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Nicolás Hidalgo García on 16 October 2021. The beatification recognition took place at the prestigious Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Córdoba, Spain, in a ceremony presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.
