Biography

Blessed Nicholas Plutzer, also known as Saint Nicholas Plutzer, was born in the early 17th century in Bohemia (in the area of modern Czech Republic) to a noble family. His early life was marked by his privileged upbringing, but he soon became notorious for a dramatic incident that would radically alter the course of his life.

During a lavish feast, Nicholas succumbed to the temptations of excessive drinking, leading him to become belligerent and violent. In a drunken rage, he even physically assaulted one of the guests. Aware of the severe consequences that awaited him for his actions, Nicholas decided to hide, hoping to escape punishment for his behavior.

In a moment of desperation and remorse, Nicholas pleaded for mercy and promised to repent for his transgressions. Just as he thought he had been discovered, he glanced up and was astonished to see a vision of Saint Norbert of Xanten, the founder of the Norbertines, enveloping him in his protective cloak. This vision served as a catalyst for Nicholas' transformation and set him on a new path.

Inspired and deeply moved by this encounter, Nicholas resolved to follow the example set by Saint Norbert. He embraced the ideals of the Norbertine Order and, in 1628, he took his vows, dedicating his life to the service of God and the Church. Nicholas was then appointed as a canon at the Stahov Monastery located just outside Prague.

Nicholas quickly established his reputation as a gifted and passionate preacher and orator. He would deliver inspiring sermons at two churches each day, drawing large crowds who were captivated by his words. His eloquence and devotion earned him recognition, and he was eventually appointed as the prior of his monastery.

Throughout his life, Nicholas cultivated a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This devotion became a central aspect of his spirituality and guided his actions and teachings. His genuine love for the Blessed Mother endeared him to the faithful and strengthened their own devotion to her.

In 1649, Nicholas assumed the position of dean at the convent in Doksany, where he continued to serve and guide the faithful. His leadership and guidance were highly valued, and his contributions to the spiritual life of the community were significant.

Blessed Nicholas Plutzer's life was a testament to the transformative power of divine grace and the capacity for redemption. From his despicable behavior during the feast, he went on to become a respected and revered member of the clergy, positively impacting the lives of countless individuals.

Although further details regarding his death are not provided, the legacy of Blessed Nicholas Plutzer lives on. He is venerated within the Premonstratensian Order, and his feast day is celebrated on June 21st. While he has not yet been officially beatified or canonized, his life serves as an inspiration for all those who strive to overcome their own weaknesses and seek spiritual growth and conversion.
