Biography

Blessed Ndre Zadeja was born on 3 November 1891 in Shkodrô, Albania. He displayed a strong devotion to his Catholic faith from an early age and felt the calling to become a priest. After completing his studies at the Shkodrô Pontifical Seminary, he pursued further theological education in Innsbruck, Austria.

On 24 April 1916, Ndre Zadeja was ordained as a priest of the archdiocese of Shkodrô-Pult, Albania. Throughout his ministry, he served as a parish priest in several places, dedicating himself to the spiritual needs of his community. But his contributions extended beyond the pastoral realm.

Blessed Ndre Zadeja was also a playwright, using his artistic talents to convey messages of faith and morality to his congregation. His plays acted as a medium through which he could touch the hearts and minds of those who witnessed his performances.

In addition to his pastoral and artistic duties, Ndre Zadeja also worked as the Secretary to the Archbishop of Shkodrô, allowing him to support the administration of the archdiocese and assist in the coordination of various pastoral activities.

Tragically, Ndre Zadeja fell victim to the anti-Christian persecutions carried out by the Albanian Communist government. On 25 March 1945, he was martyred, becoming the first of many priestly victims to suffer under the regime. His unwavering commitment to his faith and refusal to renounce his beliefs led to his ultimate sacrifice.

Recognizing his martyrdom, Pope Francis declared Ndre Zadeja venerable on 26 April 2016 and beatified him on 5 November 2016. The beatification ceremony took place at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Blessed Ndre Zadeja stands as a shining example of unwavering faith and dedication to serving others. His life and martyrdom continue to inspire and remind us of the sacrifices made by countless individuals throughout history who have steadfastly upheld their religious beliefs.
