Blessed Ndoc Suma

Biography

Blessed Ndoc Suma was born on 31 July 1887 in Nônshat, a small village in Lezhô, Albania. He received his education in Albania and later attended the Jesuit Canisianum College in Innsbruck, Austria.

Inspired by his deep faith and calling, Ndoc Suma was ordained as a priest on 21 September 1911 in the Archdiocese of Shkodrô-Pult, Albania. He dedicated his life to serving his congregation and spreading the message of love, hope, and redemption.

However, during a tumultuous period in Albania's history, the Communist regime began to persecute religious figures and suppress the Catholic Church. On 8 December 1946, Ndoc Suma was arrested for his unwavering faith. He was imprisoned and subjected to hard labor, enduring immense physical and emotional suffering. Despite the harsh conditions, Ndoc Suma remained steadfast in his devotion to God, providing strength and solace to his fellow prisoners.

As time passed, Ndoc Suma's health gradually declined due to the deplorable conditions he was subjected to in prison. Recognizing his deteriorating health and considering him a burden, the authorities eventually released him. Unfortunately, Ndoc Suma never fully recovered from his ordeal, and his health continued to deteriorate. He passed away on 22 April 1958 in Shkodrô, Albania.

Although Blessed Ndoc Suma's death was attributed to natural causes, his unwavering commitment to his faith and the suffering he endured during his imprisonment earned him the title of martyr. Pope Francis officially recognized his martyrdom on 26 April 2016, issuing a decree venerated by the Catholic Church.

In recognition of his sacrifice and spiritual fortitude, Pope Francis beatified Ndoc Suma on 5 November 2016. The beatification ceremony took place at the Square of the Cathedral of Shôn Shtjefnit in Shkodôr, Albania, presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato.

Blessed Ndoc Suma's life serves as an inspiration to all, a testament to unwavering faith and devotion in the face of adversity. He continues to be revered as a model of courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the Catholic faith. His feast day is celebrated on 22 April each year, commemorating his life and sacrifice.
