Biography

Blessed Mosè Tovini, also known as Moses Tovini, was born on 27 December 1877 in Cividate Camuno, Brescia, Italy. He was the eldest of eight children and the son of Eugenio, an accountant, and Domenica Malaguzzi, a teacher. Blessed Mosè's upbringing was greatly influenced by his uncle, Blessed Giuseppe Tovini, who played a significant role in his spiritual formation.

From a young age, Mosè displayed intellectual aptitude and was a diligent student. At the age of nine, he moved in with his uncle, Blessed Giuseppe, in Brescia to continue his studies. It was during this time that he began to feel a calling to the priesthood. However, his father initially opposed this vocation, and Mosè put off pursuing his training.

Mosè attended high school in Celana, Bergamo, but struggled with city life and faced mistreatment from his fellow students. Disheartened, he returned home, and this time his father supported his decision to become a priest. Thus, Mosè moved back in with his uncle and entered the seminary in Brescia.

After completing the minor seminary, Mosè unexpectedly took a break from his studies and joined the army. Despite his military service, his personal piety and devotion to God were evident, impressing his fellow soldiers. Eventually, Mosè reached the rank of sergeant and was discharged on 31 October 1898. He returned home and resumed his theological studies.

On 9 June 1900, at the age of 22, Mosè was ordained a priest in Brescia. Following his ordination, he was assigned as a chaplain in Astrio, Italy. Later, he was sent to Rome to further his studies and obtained degrees in mathematics, philosophy, and theology by 1904. Returning to Brescia, he began teaching at the seminary in November of that year, a position he would hold for the rest of his life. Mosè was known for his instruction in orthodox Christian doctrine and his commitment to the faith.

During this period, Mosè joined the Congregation of Oblate Priests and pursued further studies in Milan, receiving a degree in dogmatic theology. He played a vital role in organizing religious education for teachers, assisting in parish work, and dedicatedly teaching catechism.

In 1915, Mosè was appointed as the parochial vicar of Provaglio d'Iseo. Despite receiving an exemption from the draft during World War I, he continued to teach and ministered fearlessly to the sick during the Spanish flu epidemic. After the war, Mosè assisted in helping returning war veterans resume their studies at the seminary.

In 1919, he was appointed as the vice-pastor of the parish of Torbole, Italy, after its priest was drafted into the military. Mosè showed great compassion and care for his parishioners, especially during times of adversity.

In collaboration with Father Giuseppe Schena, Mosè founded the Catholic Action Movement in Italy in 1922. This organization aimed to mobilize lay people in the practice of Catholicism and promote Christian values in society.

Mosè's dedication and contributions to catechism teaching led to his appointment as the canon of the Brescia cathedral and vice-official of the ecclesiastical tribunal in 1923. In 1926, he became the director of the Institute for Training Catechism Teachers in Brescia, where he prepared numerous catechists for their essential role in spreading the faith.

Appointed as the rector of the Brescia seminary in the same year, Mosè held this position until his death. Throughout his rectorship, he consistently emphasized the importance of devotion to the Eucharist, the Immaculate Virgin, and the Pope as pillars of priestly vocation.

On 28 January 1930, Blessed Mosè Tovini passed away in Brescia, Italy, due to pneumonia. He was widely revered for his exemplary virtues and devotion to his priestly duties. Recognizing his holiness and the impact he had on the Church, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable on 12 April 2003. Later, on 17 September 2006, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, honoring his life and spirituality. The beatification ceremony took place at the cathedral in Brescia, Italy.
