Feast Day: March 15
Death: March 1, 15
Blessed Monaldus of Ancona, also known as Monaldo, was a Franciscan missionary who lived during the 14th century. Alongside two companions, he was assigned to Armenia with the mission of improving the conditions of Christians in the region and spreading the Christian faith to any Muslims who were receptive.
One notable incident in Monaldus' missionary work took place in Arzenga, Armenia, on the first Friday in Lent. The group of missionaries stood in the streets, fearlessly preaching about Jesus to the people who were heading to prayers. However, to prevent any potential violence from erupting, the local leader ordered them to cease their preaching. Undeterred by the order, the missionaries returned the following Friday to continue their mission.
Unfortunately, this persistence led to severe consequences. Local Muslims threatened and subsequently killed a devout Muslim man who had tried to defend the missionaries, speaking out against the violence. The mob then turned their aggression towards the Franciscans, attacking them with swords. The missionaries were brutally dismembered before being ultimately killed.
On the third Friday, Monaldus and his companions, who knew the risks but remained steadfast in their faith, returned once more. This time, they were swiftly arrested by the authorities and dragged to the city's public square. As a warning to others, their severed arms and legs were grotesquely displayed on the city walls. Their lifeless bodies were left in the fields, exposed to be devoured by wild animals.
However, their sacrifice did not go unnoticed. A local priest, deeply moved by their faith and courage, along with his parishioners, retrieved and collected the scattered body parts. Monaldus and the other missionaries were then given a proper burial, allowing their mortal remains to be venerated by the faithful as relics.
Blessed Monaldus of Ancona, along with his companions, is remembered as a martyr for the Christian faith. Their feast day is celebrated on the 15th of March. Additionally, the translation of their relics, the date when their remains were transferred or relocated, is commemorated on the 28th of April.
Although further information regarding Monaldus' birth, visual representation, specific veneration, or beatification is currently unavailable, his martyrdom and dedication to spreading Christianity in Armenia stand as a testament to his exemplary faith and unwavering commitment to his calling.
