Death: July 24, 1854
Blessed Modestinus of Jesus and Mary, also known as Dominic Mazzarella or Modestino of Jesus and Mary, was born on 5 September 1802 in Frattamaggiore, Diocese of Aversa, Naples, Italy. He was raised in a poor, working-class family, with his father involved in preparing hemp for rope making and his mother working as a weaver.
From a young age, Dominic felt a deep calling to religious life and began studying at the seminary in Aversa when he was just 18 years old. In 1822, he joined the Franciscan Friars Minor Alcantarini at Grumo Nevano, Italy, taking the name Modestinus of Jesus and Mary. He started his novitiate at the Santa Lucia convent in Naples, Italy. On 27 November 1824, he made his profession as a Franciscan and later began studying philosophy and theology.
Blessed Modestinus was ordained a priest on 22 December 1827 in Aversa and devoted himself to his vocation with great enthusiasm. He became a renowned preacher, sought-after confessor, and spiritual director. His ministry extended to prisoners, the sick, and women in need, especially those about to give birth. He developed a special ministry in helping these women and their newborns, providing extra support and care.
One significant aspect of Blessed Modestinus' faith was his devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel. He always carried an image of her, which he had been devoted to since his youth. His vibrant and active faith inspired many young people to deepen their own relationship with God.
Throughout his life, Modestinus served as the superior of the friaries of Mirabella Eclano in Avellino, Italy, and Pignataro Maggiore in Caserta, Italy. He also became a trusted spiritual advisor to Blessed Pope Pius IX, King Ferdinand II of Bourbon, and numerous fellow Franciscans and parishioners.
In 1839, he was transferred to the slums of Santa Maria della Sanita in Naples, where he lived for the remaining 15 years of his life. In this poverty-stricken area, he dedicated himself to working with the poor and the sick. He not only offered them spiritual guidance but also practical support in their times of need.
Tragically, Blessed Modestinus contracted cholera while caring for the sick during a cholera epidemic. He died on 24 July 1854 in Naples, Italy, as a result of this disease. He was given a separate burial by his Alcantarine brothers. Later, his remains were re-interred in the catacombs of San Gaudioso in Naples. In 1901, his relics were finally enshrined in the chapel of Our Lady of Good Counsel in the church of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria in Grumo Nevano, Italy.
Blessed Modestinus of Jesus and Mary was venerated by Pope John Paul II on 9 June 1983 when he declared his heroic virtues. His beatification took place on 29 January 1995 at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy, by Pope John Paul II. The beatification miracle involved the healing and protection of an infant girl who fell about 40 feet (12 meters) to the pavement.
Blessed Modestinus of Jesus and Mary's life is an example of profound faith, selfless service, and compassionate care for the marginalized. His devoted ministry and dedication to the poor and the sick continue to inspire and uplift believers today.
