Blessed Miroslav Bulešic was a remarkable Catholic priest and martyr who fearlessly stood up against the Communist forces that were abusing the local people in Croatia. He was born on 13 May 1920 in Cabrunici, Svetvincenat, Istarska, Croatia.
Having a strong calling to serve God, Blessed Miroslav pursued his studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy. However, his education was interrupted when the outbreak of World War II forced him to return to his homeland. Ordained as a priest in April 1943, he began his pastoral ministry in the diocese of Porec i Pula, Croatia.
Blessed Miroslav's initial assignment took him to Baderna, an area plagued by armed conflicts between Communist and Fascist forces. Despite the dangers surrounding him, he fearlessly carried out his duties, providing spiritual support and compassion to those caught in the crossfire.
After his time in Baderna, Blessed Miroslav became the parish priest in Kanfanar in 1945. Here, he continued to be an ardent advocate for justice and the well-being of his parishioners. Through his unwavering faith and outspokenness, he emerged as a strong opponent of the abuses committed by the local Communist forces.
As a result of his courageous stance against injustice, Blessed Miroslav faced great opposition and hostility. His dedication to the faith and his refusal to be intimidated by those in power ultimately led to his martyrdom. On 24 August 1947, he was brutally stabbed in the neck by a group of Communist sympathizers in Lanišce, Istarska, Croatia.
Blessed Miroslav Bulešic's exemplary life and sacrifice did not go unnoticed. Recognizing his heroic virtues, Pope Francis beatified him on 28 September 2013. The beatification recognition ceremony was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato, emphasizing the special significance and sanctity of Blessed Miroslav's life.
Today, Blessed Miroslav Bulešic is venerated as a Catholic martyr who fearlessly defended the faith and stood up for the oppressed. His feast day is celebrated on 24 August, honoring the day of his martyrdom. His story serves as an inspiration to all who face challenges in their own faith and remind us of the strength that lies in standing up for truth and justice.
