Biography

Blessed Miguel Zarragua Iturrízaga, also known as Leon, was born on 11 April 1870 in Yorreta, Vizcaya, Spain. He was baptized on the same day at the church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Yorreta. At the age of 23, Miguel joined the Franciscan Friars Minor and took the name Miguel. He made his solemn vows on 9 September 1893, dedicating his life to the service of God and his fellow human beings.

In November 1895, Miguel was assigned as a missionary to Morocco, where he spent more than a decade spreading the message of Christianity and assisting the local communities. His compassionate nature and unwavering commitment to the welfare of others earned him the admiration and respect of both Christian and non-Christian residents.

After his return from Morocco in November 1906, Blessed Miguel continued his ministry within Spain. During the devastating Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918, he devoted himself to caring for the afflicted, providing comfort and solace to those suffering from the deadly disease. His selfless dedication to the sick and dying became a testament to his deep faith and compassionate spirit.

Miguel later served as a monk and sacristan at the convent of Fuenteobejuna in Spain. In addition to his duties within the convent, he actively participated in the spiritual and communal life of the local parish, offering guidance and support to the faithful.

Unfortunately, the turbulent times of the Spanish Civil War brought immense suffering and persecution to the Catholic Church and its followers. In the early morning hours of 22 September 1936, Blessed Miguel Zarragua Iturrízaga was martyred in Azuaga, Badajoz, Spain. He remained steadfast in his allegiance to his faith, refusing to renounce his beliefs even in the face of great adversity and danger.

The heroic life and sacrificial death of Blessed Miguel were recognized by the Catholic Church, and on 28 April 2006, Pope Benedict XVI issued a decree of martyrdom, officially acknowledging his exemplification of Christian virtues and his ultimate sacrifice. On 28 October 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of "Blessed Miguel Zarragua Iturrízaga."

Today, Blessed Miguel is venerated as a symbol of courage, devotion, and selflessness. His feast days are celebrated on 22 September, the day of his martyrdom, and 6 November, along with other Martyred Friars Minor of Granada. His life serves as an inspiration to all believers, reminding them of the power of faith and the importance of serving others with love and compassion.
