Biography

Blessed Mieczyslaw Bohatkiewicz, also known as Miecislao Bohatkiewicz, was a Catholic priest born on January 1, 1904, in Kriukai (also known as Krykaly), Marijampole rajonas, Lithuania. He dedicated his life to the service of God and his fellow human beings, particularly the poor and marginalized.

Ordained as a priest, Bohatkiewicz served in the diocese of Pinsk, Belarus, where he became known for his inspiring preaching and compassionate ministry. He tirelessly worked to uplift the spirits of those in need, offering them solace, guidance, and hope in their difficult circumstances.

During the dark days of World War II and the Nazi occupation, Blessed Mieczyslaw Bohatkiewicz continued to fulfill his priestly duties, fearlessly spreading the message of love and compassion in the face of great danger. He provided spiritual support to countless people, particularly those who were persecuted and oppressed.

Sadly, on March 4, 1942, Blessed Mieczyslaw Bohatkiewicz fell victim to the Nazi persecution of Christians. He was brutally murdered, shot in the forest outside Berezovichi (Berezwecz), Hrodzyenskaya voblasts', Belarus. In a final act of indignity, his body was callously dumped in a communal grave near the place of execution.

Blessed Mieczyslaw Bohatkiewicz's martyrdom was recognized by the Catholic Church, acknowledging his unwavering faith and his ultimate sacrifice for the Gospel. On March 26, 1999, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable, affirming his heroic virtue. Then, on June 13, 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified him, bestowing the title of "Blessed" upon him.

Blessed Mieczyslaw Bohatkiewicz is commemorated on two feast days. The primary feast day is March 4, the day of his martyrdom. Additionally, he is honored on June 12 as one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II, a group of individuals who laid down their lives for their faith during the war.

His life serves as a remarkable example of steadfast commitment to God's teachings and unwavering love for humanity. Blessed Mieczyslaw Bohatkiewicz remains an inspiration to all, reminding us of the courage and strength needed to stand up against injustice, even at the cost of one's own life.
