Biography

Blessed Michal Giedroyc, also known as Michael Giedroyc or Mykolas Giedraitis, was born into the nobility in Giedraiciai (Giedrojcie), Moletu rajonas, Lithuania, around the year 1425. Despite being born with a number of birth defects, including dwarfism and the use of only one foot, Michal's life was marked by exceptional talent and devotion.

Michal's formal education was frequently interrupted and limited due to his physical challenges. However, he displayed remarkable skill as a metalworker, particularly in crafting sacred vessels for the celebration of Mass. His crafted artifacts were renowned for their beauty and attention to detail, becoming treasured pieces for numerous churches and monasteries.

Moved by a deep desire for a religious life, Michal joined the Augustinian Canons Regular of the Penance of the Blessed Martyrs, an Order which is now extinct, in Kraków, Poland. He chose to live as a hermit, residing in a small cell adjacent to an Augustinian monastery. During his time in Kraków, Michal continued his education at the prestigious University of Kraków, where he further nurtured his intellectual and spiritual growth.

Throughout his life, Blessed Michal Giedroyc was known for his profound spiritual experiences. One particularly significant event was a vision he received of Christ, who imparted to him the message, "Be patient until death, and you will receive the crown of life." This divine encounter deeply impacted Michal's faith and intensified his commitment to his religious calling.

Michal's spiritual gifts also included the ability to prophesy and perform miracles, which set him apart as an instrument of God's grace. Countless individuals sought his counsel and sought solace in his presence, as they witnessed the extraordinary favor he had been granted by heaven.

On May 4, 1485, Blessed Michal Giedroyc passed away in Kraków due to natural causes. He was laid to rest at the Church of Saint Mark in Kraków, where his tomb became a site of pilgrimage for those seeking his intercession and venerating his memory.

The veneration of Blessed Michal has endured throughout the centuries. In 1624, his relics were elevated and enshrined, further emphasizing his sanctity and profound impact on the faithful. In more recent times, a formal beatification process was initiated in 2001, resulting in Pope Francis promulgating a decree of heroic virtues, cultus confirmation, and equipollent beatification for Blessed Michal on November 7, 2018.
