Biography

Blessed Michael Joseph McGivney, born on August 12, 1852, in Waterbury, Connecticut, was the son of Irish immigrants. He displayed a strong faith and a desire for knowledge from a young age. In pursuit of his calling, he studied at the Saint-Hyacinthe Seminary in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada, beginning in 1868. Recognizing his potential, he later completed his studies at Saint Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1873.

However, before he could be ordained as a priest, tragedy struck, as Michael's father passed away. This forced him to return home to care for and support his family. Despite this setback, he remained steadfast in his commitment to serve the Church and assist those in need.

On December 22, 1877, Michael was ordained as a priest by Archbishop Joseph Gibbons at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Following his ordination, he served as an assistant pastor at Saint Mary's Church in New Haven, within the Archdiocese of Hartford, Connecticut. During his time at Saint Mary's, he actively engaged with his parishioners and recognized the challenges they faced, especially the hardships encountered by Catholic families in times of financial insecurity or the loss of a breadwinner.

Inspired by a vision to help those struggling, Father McGivney, together with a small group of dedicated parishioners, founded the Knights of Columbus on February 2, 1882. This fraternal organization aimed to provide support, both financially and spiritually, to Catholic families in need. Today, the Knights of Columbus boasts nearly two million members and significantly contributes to charitable causes worldwide, donating millions of dollars annually.

Father Michael McGivney's legacy was not only within the founding of the Knights of Columbus but also in promoting the values of charity, unity, and fraternity among its members. He recognized the importance of supporting widows and orphans and providing for the education and needs of Catholic youth. To this day, the Knights continue to carry his vision forward, remaining faithful to his ideals.

Throughout his life, Father McGivney embodied a deep compassion for the marginalized and the vulnerable. He displayed immense strength and dedication, acting as a tireless advocate for social justice and the wellbeing of others. His selfless service and unwavering commitment to his faith made him an example of holiness and virtue.

Blessed Michael Joseph McGivney was honored when Pope Benedict XVI venerated him on March 15, 2008, with a decree of heroic virtues. On October 31, 2020, Pope Francis beatified him during a ceremony held at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford, Connecticut. The beatification recognition was led by Cardinal Joseph Tobin, with the chief celebrant being Cardinal Joseph Tobin.

One of the extraordinary healings attributed to his intercession involved the in-utero healing of a baby who had fluid retention that was causing dangerous swelling near his heart. This miracle served as the basis for his beatification.

Blessed Michael Joseph McGivney's feast day was designated as August 13, chosen to fall between his birth and death dates, allowing for special remembrance and celebration of his life and legacy. As an inspiration to millions, he continues to be venerated and honored as a beloved figure in the Catholic Church, a model of faith, and a compassionate advocate for the less fortunate.
