Death: December 20, 1940
Blessed Michał Piaszczyński, also known as Micheal Piaszczynski or Michele Piaszczynski, was born on November 1, 1885, in Lomza, Podlaskie, Poland. He dedicated his life to the service of God and the Church, ultimately becoming a beloved priest in the diocese of Lomza.
After his ordination, Father Michał Piaszczyński began his ministry as a teacher and spiritual director at the Lomza seminary. It was during this time that he exhibited his remarkable commitment to promoting inter-religious dialogue. Recognizing the importance of fostering understanding and respect among different faith communities, he invited rabbis to the seminary, seeking to build bridges between Catholics and Jews.
Father Piaszczyński's friendly and sympathetic nature towards the Jewish community made him a beloved figure, especially during a time of growing tensions leading up to World War II. However, his deep commitment to inter-religious dialogue and his Polish Catholic identity made him a target for the Nazis who were seeking to suppress any form of dissent.
Tragically, Father Michał Piaszczyński was arrested by the Nazis and imprisoned in the Sachsenhausen-Oranienburg prison camp in Oberhavel, Germany. Despite enduring unimaginable suffering, he never wavered in his dedication to his faith and his mission of promoting understanding and peace among people of different religious backgrounds. On December 20, 1940, he was martyred, joining the countless victims of the Nazi regime.
Father Michał Piaszczyński's selfless sacrifice and unwavering commitment to inter-religious dialogue and harmony did not go unnoticed. On March 26, 1999, Pope John Paul II declared him venerable, recognizing his heroic virtues. Just a few months later, on June 13, 1999, Pope John Paul II beatified Father Piaszczyński, bestowing upon him the title of Blessed.
Blessed Michał Piaszczyński's feast day is celebrated on December 20, the day of his martyrdom. He is also commemorated on June 12 as one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II.
Throughout his life, Blessed Michał Piaszczyński remained dedicated to serving God and promoting peace and understanding between people of different faiths. His legacy serves as an inspiration for all those who strive to build bridges of dialogue and foster harmony among diverse communities.
