Blessed Mazelinus of Salzburg, also known as Mazelino, Maselino, or Maselinus, was a prominent figure in the late 10th and early 11th century. Born in an unknown year, he dedicated his life to monasticism and became a respected monk. Mazelinus eventually rose to the position of Abbot at Saint Peter's Abbey in Salzburg, which is located in modern-day Austria.
One notable event in the life of Mazelinus occurred during the translation of the relics of Saint Erentrude on September 4, 1023. According to legend, Mazelinus secretly took a relic during this sacred ceremony. As a consequence of this act, he was struck blind. Realizing the gravity of his offense, Mazelinus repented and returned the relic. Miraculously, his sight was restored upon doing so.
Overwhelmed with remorse, Mazelinus made the decision to step down from his position as Abbot of Saint Peter's Abbey. Seeking forgiveness and spiritual solace, he retired to Mount Geisberg, where he lived out the remainder of his days as a penitent hermit.
Blessed Mazelinus held deep reverence and devotion towards Saint Erentrude, the patron saint of Salzburg. He fervently prayed to her for forgiveness, constantly seeking her intercession. Mazelinus demonstrated a profound faith and commitment to his religious vocation, showing his willingness to submit to divine punishment and reconcile his sins.
Following his death, Blessed Mazelinus was buried in the church of the Nonnberg monastery in Salzburg. In the 17th century, his relics were enshrined in the same church. Although he is not widely venerated or recognized beyond the local region, his story serves as an inspiring example of humility, repentance, and the power of divine mercy.
Blessed Mazelinus of Salzburg's feast day is celebrated on February 17th by the Benedictines, honoring his dedicated service to the Church and his journey of spiritual transformation. While he has not been officially beatified by the Catholic Church, his life and story continue to inspire those who encounter his extraordinary example of faith and repentance.
