Blessed Mauro Álvarez Renedo, also known as Luciano, was a devout Catholic monk and a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on January 15, 1892, in Albacastro, a small town in Burgos, Spain. From an early age, Mauro exhibited a deep sense of spirituality and a strong calling to dedicate his life to the service of God.
Entering the Marist Brothers of the Schools, Mauro embraced a life of prayer, contemplation, and teaching. He devoted himself to the education and moral formation of young students, providing them with a solid foundation rooted in faith. With his gentle and compassionate nature, he became a beloved figure among those he taught.
However, Mauro's life was tragically cut short during the Spanish Civil War, a period of intense religious persecution in Spain. In the midst of the violence and chaos, he remained steadfast in his faith and unwavering commitment to his vocation. Sadly, on August 27, 1936, in Málaga, Spain, he became a martyr for his refusal to renounce his religious beliefs.
The courageous and steadfast witness of Brother Mauro Álvarez Renedo did not go unnoticed. Recognizing his martyrdom and the sanctity of his life, Pope Francis decreed his veneration on June 3, 2013. This act acknowledged his martyrdom and officially recognized him as Blessed Mauro Álvarez Renedo.
Later, on October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified Blessed Mauro Álvarez Renedo, proclaiming him as a beacon of holiness and an inspiration for the faithful. His feast day is celebrated on August 27th each year, commemorating the day of his martyrdom.
