He was born on September 14, 1869, in the town of Tardajos in Burgos, Spain. Blessed Maurilio entered the Vincentian Congregation of the Mission, also known as the Vincentians or the Congregation of the Mission, which was founded by Saint Vincent de Paul. As a member of the congregation, Blessed Maurilio Tobar sought to live out the Vincentian charism by dedicating himself to the service of the most vulnerable and marginalized.
During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, an armed conflict that took place from 1936 to 1939, Blessed Maurilio Tobar González courageously remained steadfast in his faith, even amidst great danger and persecution. The war was marked by intense religious persecution, with many clergy and religious individuals targeted for their beliefs. It was during this time that Blessed Maurilio's unwavering commitment to his faith led him to become a martyr.
Tragically, on October 29, 1936, in the city of Madrid, Spain, Blessed Maurilio Tobar González was martyred for his dedication to Christ and his service to the Church. He stood firm in his faith until the very end, choosing to remain loyal to his beliefs even in the face of persecution and death.
In recognition of his inspiring life and heroic death, Pope Francis declared Maurilio Tobar González as venerable on March 23, 2017, meaning he lived a life of heroic virtue. On November 11, 2017, Pope Francis beatified him, acknowledging his martyrdom. The beatification ceremony took place at the Palacio Vistalegre Arena, Carabanchel, Madrid, Spain, and was presided over by Cardinal Angelo Amato and Cardinal Carlos Osoro Sierra of Madrid.
