Biography

Blessed Maturinmarie Pitri was born in Fontainebleau, Seine-et-Marne, France. Little is known about his early life, but it is known that he was drafted into the French army and served in Italy during the Napoleonic wars. While stationed in Veroli, Italy, Maturinmarie fell seriously ill and was hospitalized.

During his illness, Maturinmarie was cared for by Blessed Ignace-Alexandre-Joseph Cardon, who played a significant role in his spiritual journey. It was during this time that Maturinmarie expressed his desire to join the Cistercians and commit himself to a religious life. Blessed Ignace, seeing the fervor and sincerity in Maturinmarie's words, decided to help him fulfill his calling.

When Maturinmarie regained his health in January 1799, Blessed Ignace played a crucial role in secretly smuggling him into the Casamari abbey, where he began his journey to becoming a Cistercian brother. Maturinmarie immersed himself in his new vocation, dedicating himself to a life of prayer, contemplation, and service within the abbey.

Unfortunately, the peaceful haven Maturinmarie had found within the abbey was short-lived. During the revolutionary times, French soldiers invaded Italy, seeking to suppress any religious presence and threatening the monastery where Maturinmarie resided. Despite the dangers, Maturinmarie remained steadfast in his commitment to his calling.

On the 13th of May 1799, Maturinmarie, along with his fellow Cistercian brothers, became martyrs at the hands of the French revolutionary soldiers. They were shot and killed for their unwavering faith and refusal to renounce their religious beliefs. Their sacrifice became a powerful testimony to their commitment to God and the principles of their order.

In recognition of his martyrdom and devotion, Maturinmarie Pitri was venerated on the 26th of May 2020, by a decree from Pope Francis. Then, on the 17th of April 2021, Pope Francis officially beatified Maturinmarie, celebrating and honoring his life and witness in the Cistercian Abbey of Casamari, Veroli, Italy.

Although the representation of Blessed Maturinmarie Pitri is not specified, his story and martyrdom serve as a reminder of the courage and sacrifice demonstrated by individuals who remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of great adversity. His feast day is celebrated on the 16th of May, allowing devout Catholics to commemorate his memory and seek inspiration from his unwavering commitment to God and the Church.
