Blessed Matilde Del Sagrado Corazón Téllez Robles, also known as Matilde of the Sacred Heart or Matilde Tellez Robles, was a Spanish Catholic religious sister and the founder of the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of the Church.
Matilde Tellez Robles was born on 30 May 1841 in Robledillo de la Vera, Cáceres, Spain. From a young age, she exhibited a deep devotion to God and a strong desire to serve others. Matilde committed herself to a life of prayer and holiness, finding inspiration in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
In 1873, Matilde founded the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of the Church. The congregation was dedicated to the education of young girls, caring for the sick, and providing spiritual guidance to those in need. Matilde's commitment to serving God and her passion for the work of the Church led her to establish numerous schools, hospitals, and orphanages throughout Spain.
Blessed Matilde had a profound love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which served as a guiding principle in her spiritual life. She believed deeply in the power of love and compassion, and she sought to instill these virtues in the hearts of those under her care. Matilde's faith and dedication to her religious vocation were evident in her tireless efforts to improve the lives of others, particularly the most vulnerable in society.
Matilde Tellez Robles passed away on 17 December 1902 in Don Benito, Badajoz, Spain, of natural causes. Her legacy of selfless service and devotion to God continues to inspire countless individuals to this day.
Recognizing her holiness and the impact of her work, Blessed Matilde was venerated on 23 April 2003 by Pope John Paul II, who declared her virtues to be heroic. Subsequently, on 21 March 2004, Pope John Paul II beatified her, recognizing her as a woman of exceptional holiness and a model of Christian virtue.
Today, the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary, Mother of the Church, founded by Blessed Matilde, continues to carry out her mission of spreading the love of Christ and serving those in need. The congregation has expanded its presence beyond Spain, with sisters dedicating themselves to various apostolates worldwide.
Matilde's life and teachings serve as an inspiration to all believers, reminding us of the importance of selfless love, dedication to God, and commitment to serving others. Her beatification is a testament to her extraordinary sanctity and her enduring influence within the Catholic Church.
