Biography

Blessed Mathieu-Henri Planchat, also known as Enrico Planchat, was born on 8 November 1823 in La-Roche-sur-Yon, Vendée, France. From an early age, he showed great compassion and a strong desire to help those less fortunate. His deep faith led him to pursue studies in theology, eventually leading him to Paris, France.

During his time in Paris, Mathieu-Henri joined the Religious of Saint Vincent de Paul, a religious order devoted to serving the poor and marginalized. He had the privilege of working closely with the order's founder, Venerable Jean-Léon Le Prevost, who greatly influenced his spiritual journey. Despite being engaged in his theological studies, Mathieu-Henri devoted much of his time and energy outside the classroom to ministering to the poor.

On 21 December 1850, Mathieu-Henri Planchat was ordained a priest, marking a significant milestone in his religious calling. Just three days later, on 24 December 1850, he became the first priest to join the Vincentian Institute. While most members of the institute were religious brothers, Mathieu-Henri took on the responsibility of serving as a priest, ministering to the material and spiritual needs of families, young people, soldiers, and his fellow religious brothers.

Known for his deep devotion to the Eucharist, Blessed Mathieu-Henri Planchat encouraged Eucharistic Adoration and frequent Communion among the people. He believed that the spiritual nourishment received through these sacraments played a vital role in helping individuals grow in holiness and deepen their relationship with God.

Tragically, Mathieu-Henri Planchat's life was cut short during the persecutions of the Paris Commune. On 26 May 1871, he was martyred, shot for his unwavering dedication to his faith and his tireless efforts to serve the poor.

Recognizing his heroic virtues and sacrificial death, Pope Francis declared Mathieu-Henri Planchat venerable on 25 November 2021. Then, on 22 April 2023, Pope Francis beatified him in a ceremony held in Paris, France, acknowledging and celebrating his beatification as a significant milestone for the Church.

Blessed Mathieu-Henri Planchat's life serves as an inspiring example of selflessness, compassion, and devotion to God. Through his ministry, he touched the lives of many, dedicating himself to the spiritual and material well-being of those he served. His martyrdom stands as a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to the Gospel, making him a revered figure among the faithful.
