Birth: December 23, 1902
Death: July 1, 20
Blessed Matías Cardonameseguer, also known as Matías of Saint Augustine or Mattia, was born on 23 December 1902 in Vallibona, Castellón, Spain. He was the son of Narciso Cardona and Domenica Meseguer.
Matías had a deep sense of vocation and a strong desire to serve God. He felt called to religious life and joined the Piarists on 25 June 1929. After several years of formation, he made his solemn profession on 15 August 1934, committing himself to a life of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
In recognition of his holiness and dedication, Matías was ordained as a priest on 11 April 1935. He served in Barcelona, Spain, ministering to the spiritual needs of the people and guiding them in their faith.
Unfortunately, Matías lived during a time of great turmoil in Spain. The Spanish Civil War was raging, and the country was torn apart by conflict. As a result of his unwavering faith and commitment to the Church, Matías became a target for those opposed to Catholicism.
On 20 July 1936, at Pigro de Coll, Vallibona, Castellón, Matías was tragically shot and martyred for his faith. He valiantly stood firm in his Catholic beliefs, even in the face of persecution and violence.
Although Matías Cardonameseguer's representation is not specified, his unwavering commitment to his faith and his martyrdom are a powerful testament to his holiness and dedication to God. He is remembered for his selfless service as a soldier, his perseverance as a Piarist religious, and his courageous martyrdom as a priest during a tumultuous period in Spanish history.
Blessed Matías Cardonameseguer is honored on 20 August as his primary feast day, and on 20 July on some calendars. He was officially beatified by Pope John Paul II on 1 October 1995, recognizing his martyrdom and his example of faithfulness to Christ until the end of his life.
