Biography

Blessed Martinus In Eonmin, also known as Martin, was a layman convert who was martyred during the Jeongsa Persecution in Korea. He was born in 1737 in Deoksan, Chungcheong-do, South Korea, and was known for his strong faith and deep devotion to the Catholic Church.

Not much is known about Martin's early life or his conversion to Catholicism. However, it is believed that he was inspired by the courage and faith of the foreign missionaries who had brought the teachings of Christianity to Korea.

During the 18th century, Christianity faced severe persecution in Korea. The government feared that the growing influence of the Catholic Church might undermine its power and sought to eradicate the faith. Martin, along with many other Catholics, faced constant threats and harassment from the authorities.

On 9 January 1800, Martin was beaten to death in Haemi, Chungcheong-do, South Korea, for refusing to renounce his faith. His martyrdom epitomized his unwavering dedication to his beliefs and his willingness to sacrifice his life for the Gospel.

The persecution of Catholics in Korea continued for many years, with numerous individuals, including priests, laypeople, and even children, being martyred. In recognition of their heroic witness to the faith, Pope Francis decreed their veneration on 7 February 2014. Then, on 15 August 2014, Pope Francis beatified Martin and other martyrs of Korea, declaring them Blessed.

Although there is limited information available about Martin's personal life, his heroic death stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of the early Korean Catholic Church. His sacrifice, along with that of countless others, played a crucial role in the growth and perseverance of Catholicism in Korea.

Blessed Martinus In Eonmin's feast days are celebrated on 9 January and 20 September as one of the Martyrs of Korea. On these days, faithful Catholics gather to honor his memory and seek his intercession for their own lives and the challenges they face.

Blessed Martinus In Eonmin remains an inspiration for all believers, reminding us of the importance of faith, even in the face of adversity.
