Blessed Martina Vázquez Gordo, also known as Martina Gordo, was born on 30 January 1865 in Cuéllar, Segovia, Spain. She belonged to the religious congregation of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul, dedicating her life to serving others and living a life of devotion to God.
Throughout her religious life, Martina Vázquez Gordo lived a humble and selfless existence, embracing the charism of the Daughters of Charity. She tirelessly served the poor, the sick, and the marginalized, embodying the teachings of Jesus Christ and reflecting the compassion and love of God.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, Martina Vázquez Gordo's faith and dedication to her religious vocation were severely tested. As anti-Catholic sentiments were on the rise, the Daughters of Charity faced persecution and violence from various factions. Martina, along with her fellow sisters, courageously continued their work amid threats and danger, determined to bring solace and aid to those in need.
Unfortunately, on 4 October 1936, Martina Vázquez Gordo and several of her companions were martyred in Algar de Palancia, Castellón, Spain. They were targeted for their unwavering commitment to their faith and the values they lived by. These martyrs of the Spanish Civil War, including Martina, became symbols of courage and steadfastness in the face of persecution.
Recognizing the heroic virtues and sacrificial death of Martina Vázquez Gordo, she was venerated on 27 June 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI, who decreed her martyrdom. Subsequently, on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified her, affirming her exemplary life and martyrdom as a source of inspiration and intercession for the faithful.
