Biography

Blessed Martín Martínez Pascual, also known as Father Martín Martínez Pascual, was born on 11 November 1910 in Valdealgorfa, Teruel, Spain. He was the son of Martín Martínez Callao, a carpenter, and Francisca Pascual Amposta. From a young age, Martín exhibited a strong religious inclination and was known for his devoutness.

In 1934, while studying in the seminary in the diocese of Zaragoza, Spain, Martín joined the Diocesan Laborer Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. He continued his theological studies and was eventually ordained a priest on 15 June 1935 in the diocese of Tortosa, Spain.

After his ordination, Father Martín Martínez Pascual was assigned to teach at the vocational Colegio San José de Murcia. He later became a Latin instructor at the seminary in Murcia, where his teaching abilities were highly regarded, and he was considered an excellent educator.

During the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution was at its height, Father Martín demonstrated exceptional courage and faith. When his church was threatened, he took the reserved consecrated hosts and went into hiding. Despite the constant risk to his own life, he spent his time in prayer, seeking solace in caves and haystacks.

Though Father Martín evaded the militia for a short period, he was eventually captured and imprisoned. While in captivity, he devoted himself to ministering to his fellow prisoners, hearing confessions, and distributing the Eucharist that he had saved. Despite the grave circumstances, Father Martín remained steadfast in his faith and hope. Witnessing to the power of love and forgiveness, he even offered a blessing to his executioners, praying that they would come to their senses.

Ultimately, on 18 August 1936, Father Martín Martínez Pascual was executed by a firing squad at the cemetery in Valdealgorfa, Teruel, Spain. His martyrdom serves as a powerful testimony to his unwavering dedication to his faith and his commitment to serving others, even in the face of great adversity.

Blessed Martín Martínez Pascual was officially recognized for his martyrdom and formally venerated on 6 July 1993 by Pope John Paul II, who issued a decree of martyrdom. Later, on 1 October 1995, Pope John Paul II beatified him, affirming his holiness and sanctity as a blessed of the Catholic Church.
