Feast Day: October 23
Birth: March 3, 1914
Death: October 23, 1936
Blessed Martín Erro Ripa, also known as Teófilo Martín, was a devout Monk and a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. He was born on March 3, 1914, in Viscarret, Navarra, Spain, to a deeply religious family. From a young age, Martín showed a strong inclination towards spirituality, dedicating himself to a life of prayer and seeking a deeper connection with God.
In 1931, at the age of 17, Martín joined the Marist Brothers, a religious congregation founded by St. Marcellin Champagnat, with the mission of educating and guiding young people. As a Brother, Martín undertook a life of self-discipline, simplicity, and service, striving to emulate the humility and compassion of Jesus Christ.
During the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), religious persecution was widespread in Spain. The anti-Catholic sentiments prevalent at the time targeted countless priests, religious, and laypeople who remained loyal to their faith. Unfortunately, Martín became a victim of this persecution.
On October 23, 1936, Brother Martín and several other Marist Brothers were captured by Republican forces in Reinosa, Santander, Spain. The captors subjected them to physical and psychological abuse, hoping to force them to renounce their religious beliefs. However, even in the face of unimaginable suffering, Martín remained steadfast in his faith, offering solace and encouragement to his fellow Brothers.
Tragically, on that same day, Brother Martín Erro Ripa was martyred for his unwavering commitment to his Catholic faith. The details of his martyrdom remain unclear, but it is believed that he was executed for refusing to renounce his religious vows and for remaining loyal to the teachings of the Church.
Recognizing his extraordinary courage and devotion to the faith, Pope Francis venerated Martín Erro Ripa on June 3, 2013, by decreeing his inclusion in the martyrology. On October 13, 2013, Pope Francis beatified him, bestowing upon him the title of Blessed Martín Erro Ripa.
Blessed Martín Erro Ripa serves as a shining example of unwavering faith and courage in the face of adversity. His life and martyrdom inspire countless individuals to remain faithful to their beliefs and to pursue a life of holiness and service to others. His feast day is celebrated on October 23rd each year, providing an opportunity for the faithful to honor his memory and seek his intercession. May his example continue to guide and inspire us on our own spiritual journeys.
