Blessed Martín Arbé Barrón, also known as Ismael Ricardo, was a professed religious in the Brothers of the Christian Schools, commonly known as the De La Salle Brothers. He is honored as a martyr for his faith during the Spanish Civil War.

Martín Arbé Barrón was born on 1 January 1906 in the village of Añastro, Treviño, Burgos, Spain. From a young age, he exhibited a deep devotion to his Catholic faith and a calling to serve others. Inspired by the charism of the De La Salle Brothers, he entered their religious congregation, committing his life to education and the spiritual formation of young people.

As a member of the De La Salle Brothers, Martín Arbé Barrón dedicated himself to teaching and guiding students in schools across Spain. His commitment to providing quality education grounded in Christian values left a lasting impact on the lives of numerous young people.

Tragically, during the tumultuous period of the Spanish Civil War, when religious persecution was rampant, Martín Arbé Barrón was arrested for his religious beliefs. On 30 November 1936, he was martyred in Paracuellos de Jarama, Madrid, Spain, along with many other innocent victims who were targeted solely because of their faith.

Martín Arbé Barrón's sacrifice and unwavering commitment to his beliefs were not forgotten. His heroic witness to Christ's love and his dedication to the education of youth earned him special recognition in the Catholic Church. On 19 December 2011, Pope Benedict XVI acknowledged his martyrdom by decreeing his venerability.

In a ceremony held on 13 October 2013, Pope Francis beatified Martín Arbé Barrón, officially declaring him Blessed. This beatification served as a testament to his exemplary life, his martyrdom, and his enduring faithfulness to Christ.

As a martyr, Blessed Martín Arbé Barrón stands as a shining example of courage and faith in the face of persecution.
