Feast Day: March 19
Blessed Mark of Montegallo, also known as Marco, Marcos, or Markus, was an Italian nobleman born in 1426 in Montegallo, Ascoli Piceno, Italy. He hailed from the Marches of Ancona and dedicated his life to serving God and helping those in need.
Mark started off as a physician and led a successful life in the medical profession. However, he and his wife felt called to leave their worldly pursuits behind and join the Franciscan order. Mark's wife, in particular, became a Poor Clare, taking on the life of a contemplative nun in the Franciscan tradition.
Having become a priest, Mark embarked on a mission to preach throughout Italy, spreading the word of God and establishing charitable pawnshops for the poor. These pawnshops, known as Monti di Pieta, were institutions established for the purpose of providing low-interest loans to those in need, allowing them to overcome financial struggles without falling into the hands of usurers.
Mark's dedication to serving the poor and his tireless efforts in spreading God's message made him a beloved figure among the people. His charisma and humility attracted a large following as he traveled from town to town, providing spiritual guidance and assisting those in need.
Blessed Mark of Montegallo lived a long and fruitful life, passing away in 1497 of natural causes. Over time, the recognition of his holiness and the impact of his charitable work grew, eventually leading to his beatification in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI. His feast day is celebrated on March 19th, although on some calendars, it is observed on March 17th, March 20th, or even February 9th.
Throughout his life, Blessed Mark of Montegallo exemplified the virtues of compassion, selflessness, and dedication to God. His legacy as a physician turned Franciscan preacher, as well as his establishment of pawnshops for the disadvantaged, continues to inspire and serve as a reminder of the importance of caring for those less fortunate.
