Biography

Blessed Mario Ghibaudo, born on 19 January 1920 in Borgo San Dalmazzo, Cuneo, Italy, was a Catholic priest known for his selfless service and martyrdom during World War II. Ordained on 19 June 1943, he began his priestly ministry in the diocese of Cuneo, Italy. Shortly after his ordination, Father Mario was assigned to a parish in Boves, Italy, where he dedicated himself to ministering to the local community.

During World War II, Boves became a place of great suffering, with many young people and civilians affected by the conflict. Father Mario developed a special ministry to console and help the youth who were enduring the hardships of war. In addition to his pastoral duties, he also served as a chaplain to Alpine soldiers stationed nearby, offering spiritual support to the troops fighting for their country.

On the evening of 19 September 1943, tragedy struck when German troops carried out the infamous Boves Massacre. In retaliation for an attack on German forces, the civilians of Boves were targeted, and many innocent lives were lost. Despite the danger, Father Mario courageously chose to stay behind to help children and the elderly escape the violence.

While ministering to a dying man, providing him with the sacrament of absolution, Father Mario was brutally attacked by a German soldier. He was machine-gunned and then stabbed to death. The soldier continued to unleash a vicious assault on his body, repeatedly stabbing him and beating him with a rifle butt. The untimely death of Father Mario was a tragic loss, but it also became a powerful testament to his unwavering faith and sacrifice.

On 20 September 1943, Blessed Mario Ghibaudo was laid to rest in the municipal cemetery of Borgo San Dalmazzo, Cuneo, Italy. His selfless actions and martyrdom have inspired many, and his reputation for holiness continued to grow over the years. Finally, on 9 April 2022, Pope Francis officially recognized his martyrdom, declaring him venerable. Later, on 16 October 2022, Pope Francis beatified him in a solemn ceremony at Piazza A.V.I.S. Donatori di Sangue in Boves, Italy, presided over by Cardinal Marcello Semeraro.
