Biography

Blessed Marino of Cava, also known as Marino of Cava dei Tirreni, was a Benedictine monk and a spiritual student of Blessed Falco of Cava. He was born in an unknown year and dedicated his life to serving God through his monastic vocation.

In the year 1146, Marino was chosen as the seventh abbot of the Holy Trinity monastery in Cava dei Tirreni, located in the region of Campania, Italy. This appointment was accompanied by a blessing from Pope Eugene III, emphasizing the significance of his role within the monastery. Marino faithfully served as abbot for 24 years, providing guidance and spiritual leadership to the monastic community.

During his tenure as abbot, Marino displayed great dedication to the growth and development of the Holy Trinity monastery. He undertook the task of expanding and reconstructing various elements of the monastery, ensuring its physical and spiritual well-being. Additionally, he played a significant role in the reform and expansion of the San Lorenzo monastery in Panisperna, Italy, contributing to the spiritual enrichment of the broader monastic community.

Blessed Marino of Cava was notable for his unwavering loyalty to the Pope during a tumultuous period of strife. He acted as a peacemaker between Pope Adrian IV and King Guglielmo il Malo of Sicily, striving to maintain harmony and resolve conflicts for the greater good of the Church.

Following his death, he was buried in the Holy Trinity Cathedral at the monastery of Cava dei Tirreni. In 1648, his relics were enshrined to honor his holy memory, and in 1928, under the altar of the cathedral, his relics found a permanent resting place.

Recognizing his sanctity and the impact of his pious life, Pope Pius XI beatified Blessed Marino of Cava on 16th May 1928. This act of beatification confirmed his cultus or popular devotion, amplifying the veneration bestowed upon him by the faithful. Over the years, countless individuals have sought his intercession, turning to him as a heavenly advocate and modeling their lives after his virtues.
